No one who tries these soft and classic chocolate chip cookies will believe they are vegan!

The one-bowl recipe is simple to make and requires no almond flour or applesauce, as well as no coconut oil.

Try the cookies with spelt flour, oat flour, or plain white all-purpose flour. I haven’t tried whole wheat flour yet, so I can’t vouch for it.

The source of fat: Sunflower, coconut, and vegetable oil are all viable options. Alternatively, use a full-fat vegan butter spread like Melt Organic, Miyoko’s, or Earth Balance.

For the sweetener, feel free to experiment with various sugars or sugar substitutes such as xylitol or granulated erythritol.

You can also use only one type of sugar instead of both. The resulting cookies may be crisper or more spread, or they may require more or less time in the oven, but edible baking experiments are the best kind of experiments!

Is chocolate a vegan food?

And, finally, are chocolate chips vegan? I’m frequently asked these questions, and the answer is, thankfully, that chocolate is vegan.

While milk is occasionally added, there are many brands—including some generic grocery store brands—of vegan chocolate chips and chocolate bars that are becoming more widely available.

If you want to look for vegan chocolate chips in a regular grocery store, the natural food aisle is the best place to start. Natural foods should be available in most regular grocery stores. If you’re unsure where it is, simply ask an employee.

Look for Enjoy Life, Simple Truth Organic, Target Simply Balanced, Lily’s Sweet Stevia Sweetened, or Kirkland semi sweet (Costco brand),

Guittard semi-sweet or extra-dark chocolate, Equal Exchange Trader Joe’s semi sweet, Scharffen Berger dark chocolate baking chunks Semi-sweet sprouts, also known as Pascha.

Because the chocolate chips are made in a facility that also produces non-vegan products, some of these packages state on the label, “may contain milk.”

Most vegans still consider such products to be vegan, but this is a personal choice, especially if you are allergic to milk. At the time of publication, the Enjoy Life and Pascha brands were dairy, gluten, and soy free.

What Stores Sell Vegan Chocolate?

As previously stated, vegan chocolate chips can be found in many regular grocery stores. Whole Foods, local health food stores, Amazon, and iHerb are also good places to look.

Online stores will occasionally offer a lower price. At the very least, you can chop up a chocolate bar to make your own chocolate chips!

There are far too many vegan chocolate bar options to list here, but some of my favorites are Theo, Pacari, Taza, Loving Earth, and Endangered Species. And there are plenty more.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

1 – Collect all of the cookie ingredients and a medium mixing bowl.

2 – In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips. Stir thoroughly.

3 – Combine the nondairy milk, oil, and pure vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. To make cookie dough, combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl. It will be dry at first, but keep stirring until it transforms into cookie dough.

4 – Form the dough into a large ball. Refrigerate for at least two hours, or freeze until the dough is cold.

5 – Preheat the oven to 325°F after it has been chilled. Roll the chocolate chip cookie dough into balls and place them on a greased cookie sheet. Allow enough space between cookies to allow for spreading when they bake.

6 – Cook for 11 minutes on the center rack of the oven. When you remove the cookies from the oven, they will appear underdone. This is desirable because they continue to firm up significantly as they cool.

7 – Allow at least ten minutes for the chocolate chip cookies to cool. If the cookies do not spread enough after baking, simply press down with a spoon.

Storage and Baking Methods

Roll the cookie dough into balls and freeze in an airtight container for up to three months to have on hand whenever a chocolate chip cookie craving strikes. There is no need to thaw the cookie dough before baking. Simply add another 1-2 minutes to the cooking time.
To keep leftover chocolate chip cookies soft, store them in an airtight plastic container with about 1/4 slice of bread, if you have one. Store cookies in a glass container for crisper results. Baked cookies will keep for about 2-3 days.

I’ve made these cookies numerous times, and the shape and texture of the finished product are definitely affected by the weather. Despite the fact that each batch has not always looked the same, they have all tasted ridiculously delicious. I’ve yet to make a bad batch.
The vegan chocolate chip cookies are ideal for lunchboxes or parties where you need a portable vegan dessert that you can take from point A to point B without making a mess.
